How to Find and Inspect Hidden Large Files on macOS

Discover multi-gigabyte hidden videos, disk images, and container caches lurking deep inside your ~/Library folder.

The Limitation of Finder for Large Files

Apple's Finder hides system folders by default. Even when using Spotlight search with Size > 1GB, Spotlight completely ignores files stored in ~/Library, developer directories, hidden Unix folders, and containerized sandboxes.

As a result, abandoned virtual machine disks (like Docker's 64GB Docker.raw), old Final Cut Pro rendering render-files, and uncompressed simulator archives remain completely invisible in Finder.

Terminal Commands to Find Hidden Monster Files

Use native POSIX commands to scan your user directory for any file larger than 500 MB:

# Find all files larger than 500MB in your home directory
find ~ -type f -size +500M -exec ls -lh {} + 2>/dev/null | awk '{ print $5, $9 }' | sort -hr | head -n 20

Find top 10 largest folders inside ~/Library:

du -sh ~/Library/* 2>/dev/null | sort -hr | head -n 10

Inspect Large Files Visually with Storage X-Ray

Instead of guessing paths in Terminal, XrayMac's Storage X-Ray renders your entire disk hierarchy in proportional, interactive treemap blocks. Drill down into Desktop, Library, and Downloads instantly with 1-click threshold filters (>100MB, >500MB, >1GB).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to delete files found in ~/Library?

Never delete files from ~/Library blindly. Only delete files inside ~/Library/Caches, or use an uninstaller like XrayMac that understands application dependency trees.
